Painter, ceramist and sculptor, Guerrino Tramonti was born in Faenza on 30 June 1915 . In the second half of the 1920s, he attended the Royal School of Ceramics in Faenza where he learned more about colours from master Anselmo Bucci. Domenico Rambelli stands out among the most important teachers for the future of the young artist. However, Tramonti considers himself primarily a self-taught artist. He participated to regional and national exhibitions with sculptures since he was very young: in 1931, when he was only 16, he received the “Rimini” award; in 1932 and in 1934 he won the 1st prize at the “Rubicone” competition in Rimini. In this occasion Arturo Martini, a member of the jury, invited him to follow him to his workshop in Milan, but he refused. In 1938, when he was just over twenty years old, he ranked 1st in the National Ceramic Competition organized by the city of Faenza. At this event, the “concise straightforwardness of some figures” was particularly appreciated in a group of works in terracotta and polychrome enamels made at “Casa d’Arte Agnino & Barile” in Albisola, where Tramonti moved for about one year to work as a modeller. The winning sculpture, “Testa di giovinetta” (Head of a young girl), went from the competition to the collections of the Faenza International Museum of Ceramics but was destroyed during the Second World War. Between 1944 and 1947 he moved to Venice, where he attended the workshop of Filippo De Pisis, who he already met several times during his exhibitions in Emilia-Romagna since 1933. In 1951 he opened his workshop in via Tolosano in Faenza and was appointed modelling teacher at the Art School of Civita Castellana, a ceramic centre near Rome. He had access to the best artistic and cultural environments in the capital thanks to his friendship with the painter Franco Gentilini, whom he had known since his adolescence. During the following decades, until the late 1960s, when he stopped making ceramics to focus on painting, he received multiple awards including two "Premio Faenza" in 1952 (for works made in collaboration with Antonio Scordia) and in 1955 (ex-aequo with Carlo Negri). In 1956 the Rome-based publisher De Luca published his monograph with an introduction by Leonardo Sinisgalli, in the series "Artisti d’oggi" (artists of today). In 1953 he was appointed Director of the Art School for Ceramics of Castelli d’Abruzzo; in 1958 Director of the Art School of Cagli; in 1959 Director of the Forlì National Art Institute until the late 1960s. Finally -without exercising this position - he was appointed Director of the Institute of Ceramics of Nove di Bassano where he ended his teaching career in the early 1970s. From the 1970s onwards, he continued to hold successful exhibitions, in group and individually, in Italy and worldwide. Guerrino Tramonti died in Faenza on 17 October 1992.
In November, following the artist’s wishes, his family prepared the "Tramonti House-Museum" in his home in via Fratelli Rosselli. The private museum, currently managed by the Tramonti Foundation, preserves and exhibits the entire career of the artist, from the early 1930s sculptures to discs painted with bright colours and lined with thick crystalline; from 1960s white stoneware vases-sculptures to oil paintings on panel of his last period of activity.
