Information about the coat in WWII : the leather greatcoat was a standard uniform item for wear by all ranks, with minor variations, and followed the basic design of the Imperial German Army’s greatcoat. During WWII, the German armed forces utilised at least 13 different styles of greatcoats with numerous variations and intended purposes. Of these assorted jackets/greatcoats, officers and officials with officer ranks were entitled to wear an optional leather version of the standard greatcoat. Officer’s and certain senior NCO’s were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and were allocated a clothing allowance. Generally speaking, officers bought good quality when buying uniform items privately, but they also had the choice of buying their uniforms directly from military clothing depots, both civilian and military models of the leather greatcoat were available.
