Antique chess figures in the Selenus style in the chess box
The name Selenius goes back to Gustavus Selenus - Duke August II of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1579 - 1666), whose book "Vom Schach-oder Königsspiel" described for the first time chess pieces with round heels or baskets.
The chess pieces are hand-turned. Each piece differs significantly from the other pieces. So it is not possible to assume an industrial production with stencils, which suggests a very early production in the 17th or 18th century.
The chess pieces stem from an old collection. The set is complete. The pieces show discoloration, damage and missing parts. The red king is largely discoloured. A pawn's head is missing. Another pawn is broken. A bishop appears to be shorter.
The condition of the pieces is well documented in the photos.
Whether the pieces and the chess box have always belonged together is not known.
The exterior of the chess box is well preserved. However, the backgammon field inside has strong signs of use.
