Biography:
Carlo Levi (1902-1975).
Carlo Levi was born in Turin on 29th November 1902, son of Ercole Levi and Annetta Treves, sister of the socialist leader Claudio. He studied at the Alfieri high school in Turin, attended in those same years by Leone Ginzburg, Massimo Mila, Giulio Einaudi, Giaime Pintor and Cesare Pavese. He then studied medicine, graduating in 1924. In the same year he became assistant to Professor Micheli at the Medical Clinic of the University of Turin and in the following years he conducted experimental work on liver diseases and biliary tract diseases. In 1918 he met Piero Gobetti and since 1922 he collaborated with his magazine 'La Rivoluzione Liberale'; since then his relations with the whole antifascist area of Turin have been intense.
In 1924-25 he served in Monteoliveto, near Florence, then at Moncenisio; in Florence he met the Rosselli brothers. In 1929, the 'Giustizia e Libertà' group was formed in Paris (among the founders, the Rosselli brothers, Emilio Lussu, Gaetano Salvemini, Ernesto Rossi); Levi became an important exponent in Turin, participating in 1931 in the drafting of the Programma rivoluzionario di Giustizia e Libertà. He collaborated with some articles in the following years in the 'Quaderni di Giustizia e Libertà' and transformed his frequent trips to Paris as a painter in risky contacts with anti-fascist exiles. At the same time he became interested in painting and exhibited for the first time in 1923, during the Quadriennale of Turin; in the same year he met Felice Casorati, thanks to Gobetti, and since 1924 he regularly participated in the Biennale of Venice. In 1925 he met the critic Edoardo Persico in Turin; he began his frequent stays in Paris, where he sometimes stayed for a long time to paint. In 1929 he exhibited with the group of 'Sei di Torino' - supported by Persico and art historian and critic Lionello Venturi - in Turin, Genoa and Milan; the following year the Bloomsbury Gallery in London hosted an exhibition by Levi, Enrico Paulucci and Francesco Menzio, largely recalled in Rome in 1931 by the Galleria di Roma of P. M. Bardi. He was present in the first Quadriennale in Rome in 1931 and in a group exhibition of Italian art in Syracuse, near New York. In the same year he met Guttuso in Rome and, with Enrico Paulucci, he also began to take an interest in set design and screenplay for the film company Cines. From 1932 to 1934 he almost exclusively lived in Paris. His first solo exhibition in Paris was organised in 1932 by the Jeune Europe Gallery, followed the next year by a solo exhibition at the Bonjean Gallery. Arrested in March 1934 for his connections with Giustizia e Libertà, he was released in May, undergoing a warning for two years. The invitation to exhibit at the Biennale in Venice that same year was revoked after his arrest, despite a letter of solidarity to the Biennale, signed by leading French artists, including Léger, Chagall, Derain. On 15th May 1935 he was arrested for the second time and sentenced to three years of police confinement in Lucania, first in Grassano, then in Aliano. In May 1936, on the occasion of the proclamation of the Empire, his release from the confinement was ordered. In November 1936 the Galleria del Milione in Milan organised his solo exhibition with works made in Lucania; the exhibition moved in December to Genoa, at the Galleria Genova. In May 1937 many works made in Lucania were presented in a solo exhibition at the Galleria della Cometa in Rome, which at the end of the year included Levi in the group Anthology of Contemporary Italian Painting at its New York branch. This American location probably hosts his own solo exhibition at the beginning of 1938, including paintings from the confinement period. In 1939 he was forced by racial laws to flee to France, then he came back in 1941, settling in Florence. He has a leading role in the Partito d'Azione; arrested in the spring of 1943, he was released on 26th July of the same year; he is a member of the Comitato toscano di liberazione and he is co-editor of the Florentine daily newspaper ‘La Nazione del Popolo’, a CLN orgaisation. He published in 1945 Cristo si è fermato a Eboli, written in Florence in the last years of the war and related to his experience
of the confinement; it is his most famous writing and translated into many languages. In June 1945 he moved to Rome, where he directed ‘L'Italia libera’, the national body of the Partito d'Azione. He started his exhibitions again, with solo exhibitions in Italy and, in 1947, in New York, at the Wildenstein Gallery and with participation in the most important periodical exhibitions. The 1954 Biennale in Venice organised his own personal room, with many paintings of subjects from the Lucania period. The artistic activity continued intense throughout the fifties and sixties, intertwined with his constant literary production and his presence on the political scene.
In 1950 he published L'Orologio, written in Rome between 1945 and 1946 and, between 1951 and 1952, he travelled to Calabria, accompanied by Rocco Scotellaro, then to Sicily and Sardinia. His journey to the USSR dates back to 1955; the following year he went to India and, in 1959, he went to China. In 1955 he published Le parole sono pietre (tre giornate in Sicilia), in 1959 La doppia notte dei tigli, in 1960 Un volto che ci somiglia (Ritratto dell'Italia) and in 1964 Tutto il miele è finito. In 1961, for the Lucania pavilion included in the Turin exhibition 'Italia 61', he painted a panel with Lucanian subject, more than 18 metres long. In 1963 he was elected Senator as independent on the lists of the Italian Communist Party; he joined the Commissione parlamentare Istruzione pubblica e Belle Arti. His appointment was confirmed in the 1968 elections. In 1973 he had detached retina and underwent two surgical operations. In a state of temporary blindness, he made 140 drawings and wrote, with the help of a special frame, the work that would be published posthumously with the title Quaderno a cancelli. In 1974, a large anthological exhibition of his figurative production was organised at Palazzo Te in Mantua, a few months before the artist's death. Together with Guttuso and Cagli he had the task of creating a work that recalls the massacre of the Fosse Ardeatine; Cagli illustrates oppression, Guttuso the massacre, Levi the liberation, works then donated to the monumental complex of the Fosse Ardeatine. Between 7th and 10th December he made his last visit to Basilicata, presenting a folder of 7 lithographs inspired by Cristo si è fermato a Eboli, published by the publisher Esposito of Turin. He was hospitalised on 23th December 1974, died in Rome on 4th January 1975 after a few days of coma. He is buried in Basilicata, in Aliano.

    Ottimo lotto. Prezzo corretto

L’unica nota è quella di non usare più Bartolini per le consegne, non sono professionali e ho dovuto necessariamente recuperare il collo di persona.
