Amazing large sized Meerschaum Pipe from the 19th century, hand carved and depicting the “ITALIA TURRITA”, the national personification or allegory of Italy.
From Wikipedia:
The allegory of Italy is characterised by a mural crown (hence turrita or "with towers" in Italian) typical of Italian civic heraldry of Medieval communal origin. In broader terms, the crown symbolizes its mostly urban history. Over her head, a five-pointed star is usually seen shining radiant; an ancient secular symbol of Italy purported to protect the nation, known as Stella d'Italia or Star of Italy.
Masterly hand carved feminine face with very fine long hair falling on the stem; this last is embellished with scroll and garlands in Rocaille style.
On top of the head, the star and the mural crown.
Dimensions: 13 x 9 x 4.5 cm Weight: 77.8 grams.
In good condition considering the age (mid-19th century). Mouthpiece is missing.
The magnifying glass shows the traces of an old repair in the middle of the stem, as shown by pictures, that are an integral part of the description. The lighter in the pictures is not included in the lot.
Careful tracked shipping.
Happy bidding!
