Paolo Grimaldi was born on the 20th of January in Trieste under the Art’s sign. In fact, his father was a publisher of art books and precious monographs of the great masters of the Ecole de Paris (Chagall, Mirò, Picasso, Modigliani, Matisse). He brings with him the young Paolo in his travels in Europe, in the studies of artists and in museums, educating his sensitivity to art. Thus began his love for drawing, he copies and copies Andrea del Sarto, known as Andrea ‘senz'errori’ (no mistakes) for his perfection, Perugino, Durer for his engravings. Meanwhile, he attended some art print shops, where he learnt to make silk screens, lithographs and etchings. Following the instinct of freedom, common to many artists, after completing his scientific studies, he left for Spain. He stops first in Malaga, then in Marbella, where he attends the studies of Spanish artists, and begins to make portraits on commission. So he keeps on doing this for six months, during which he begins the study of the psychology of the figure. Back in Italy, he decided to devote himself completely to painting. He goes back to study the pictorial techniques of Classical Art, elaborates a personal style and deepens the study of colour. He travels to Sweden. He stops in Gothenburg for a few months and paints a cycle of abstract paintings in black-and-white. He moved permanently to Umbria. In a short time he became known as a portraitist and performed a large number of portraits, receiving private commissions from many Italian cities. He travel through medieval cities, by tracing the ideal artistic routes of Pinturicchio, Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Lorenzetti, and uniting them to the places of their passage, he develops some architectural compositions where memory and dream coexist with reality and appearance. From this moment onwards he will paint exclusively monuments and buildings of the oneiric, which he will call “Borghi Onirici”. He studies a personal pictorial technique using the table as a support on which he spreads material mixes of marble powder, stucco and glue. As colour, he uses tempera, which he prepares on his own, and oil; he uses gold and silver leaf, following the gilding technique used in the fourteenth century, wax as a final finish. He lives and works in Spello in Umbria.
