Born in a peasant family in 1880, Nikolaj learned the art of icon painting at the age of 15 in a monastery.
In 1897 Nikolaj attended a painting school in Petersburg and attended the art academy beginning in 1901.
Soon, he became a pupil of the famous painter Ilya Repin. With the image of "Mädchen im Schnee", he had his first major success at an exhibition in 1907. In 1909, his famous work "Die Zigeunerin" was created. After graduation, he undertook many travels through Russia and Europe, and lived mainly in France. At that time, he also created several portraits of the Tsar family.
During the revolutionary turmoil of 1917, Kharitonov fled to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In Zagreb (Croatia), he worked as a stage designer. In 1923, he moved to New York and later became an American citizen. His portraiture has become increasingly well-known and his works can be found today in many museums and private collections in Russia, Europe and the USA.
The private life of Nikolaj Kharitonov without family, without children was difficult. Contact with his relatives in Communist Russia was cut off. Therefore, he highly valued his friendships. My grandmother,Ludmila Skuratova (photo), belonged to his circle of friends in Yugoslavia, whose daughter he had once painted fleetingly (not for sale).
The picture of a beach scene released for auction was painted on the coast of Croatia between 1918 and 1923.
Like the picture of the little daughter, the beach picture has remained unsigned as a fleeting sketch.
A restoration would do the image some good.
