Biography of Francesc Domingo Segura (Barcelona, 1895 - Brasil, 1974)
Francesc Domimgo Segura was born in the village of Sants (added to the city of Barcelona 1895), on April 3, 1893 His father was the manager in the village’s Ateneum bar, and therefore, he knew already -as a child- the atmosphere of social groups. He studied painting and engraving in Barcelona’s School of Fine Arts, and 1918 he joined the newly-formed group Curbet (which was a precursor of the Catalan Avant-garde during the 1920s). There he met artists such as Joan Miró, Josep Obiols, Luis Llimona, José de Togores, etc. Despite his multiple evolutions, he always kept his concern for structuralism, due to his admiration for Cézanne.
During his Paris period (1922-27) he approached Cubism and improving the colours in his palette. From 1927 to 1931 he lived in Brittany, where he developed his spectral period and he tried the lineal, shaded graphism. His ‘Maternidad’, from this period, is very close to the best works by Fernand Léger (1881-1955). In 1931 he returned to Barcelona and he drifted towards a more classical painting. He cultivated a social realism, devoid of demagoguery, by idealizing the working class leisure, as well as other collective subjects that he has already started during his first years in Barcelona. Thanks to the preciosity of his style he acquired a well-deserved reputation as a portraitist.
After the Spanish Civil War ( 1936-1939), in a Barcelona without artistic illusions, he is influenced by the general confusion and after 10 fruitless years he decided to emigrate to South America. On April 30th 1950 he arrived in Buenos Aires, with the help of his friend, art promoter and editor Joan Merli (Barcelona, 1901-1995), who was also exiled from the Civil War and lived in the Argentinian capital since 1940. There, Domingo found the support of Merli friends, and his accurate portrait technique provided him the necessary income to have a decent life.
However, his obsession was Brazil. On his way to Buenos Aires, he was captivated by the Puerto de Santos: ‘ By the green of the mountains on the background, and specially, by the plastic vitality of its light” His brothers-in-law and his friend Mofort lived in Sao Paulo. That is how, fulfilling his desire, he arrived in Sao Paulo on August 23th, 1951, and he settled there for good. In Sao Paulo he taught drawing, painting, and specially, engraving. He opened an art gallery. There, he also met other Catalans, such as the musician Miquel Arquerons Verdaguer, who was the director fo the Sao Paulo choir, the painter Pedro Tort, the publishers Monfort and Mestre Jou, the photographer and collector Marcel Giró and the Faus, businessmen in the cotton and coffee sectors.
For Domingo, this Brazilian period interrupted or was maybe the end of this previous pictorial career: Paris, Brittany and Barcelona are like a whole in his rich artistic pilgrimage, and is reflected in the works exhibited in museums and private collections that - in their own right- could be in any well-documented anthology of the Catalan painting of the 20th c.
Domingo was always a man true to himself, to his time and his background, but he never surrendered to the temptation of the prevailing fashion. His strong personality did not prevent him from being respectful with this background. He was rather a transmitter of his background and its details, and with this goal he conceived his pictorial scheme, his strokework, his palette, and his expressive concept of painting.
The paintings and engravings of his 23 yeas in Sao Paulo ( he died in 1974) are a clear reflection of his respect and his love for the land that adopted him. His painting “Homenagem a la mae preta’ is a beautiful tribute to the Brazil of the 1950s. In 1973 or 1974 the city of Sao Paulo held a well-deserved tribute of his Brazilian work. He held two exhibitions in Barcelona in 1967 and 1973.
However, Domingo didn’t forget his land of origin. In 1972, a Catalan magazine published a questionnaire that Doming answered in writing at the age of 79. When asked if he thought of returning to Catalonia, he replied; “the return...! Nobody can make plans for the future. We live in Brazil as Catalans, thinking of Catalonia and for Catalonia”. As already said, Francisco Domingo Segura died in Brazil in 1974.
He could not come back to his origins, but he died in that land which was able to fascinate him for the plastic vitality of his light.

Soc. Catawiki. Cordialmente. Franco Bizzotto
