This is the first trade edition of Arthur Rackham’s lovely ‘Mother Goose’, with 13 beautiful colour plates, plus numerous line drawings and silhouettes – as well as a charming halftone plate depicting Little Bo-peep.
The poems in this collection “were chosen by Rackham, presumably in terms of themes and subjects he wished to illustrate: this would account for the consistently good quality of the many plates and of the numerous line drawings … we have the usual Rackham motley of lovely women, Rackham-faced gnomes, and all the images we might expect of the title. Quite appropriately Rackham illustrates ‘As I was going to St Ives’ with his own portrait, in a situation which is almost akin to a schizophrenic’s dream, with the dance of seven witches, and the multiples of seven cats and kittens” (Fred Gettings, ‘Arthur Rackham’).
One of Rackham’s most delightful works, somewhat scarce in the true first edition, as here.
Contents very clean overall. Usual age-toning to paper, a few pale smudges/finger-marks, three short closed tears, a few creases. Text pages and tissue guards with foxing throughout (often heavy). One tissue guard with long closed tear (re-glued at foot). Endpapers with usual foxing/offsetting, a little soiling. Slight musty odour; should air out easily. Edges of page block with foxing; top with scratching, slight loss to colour. Binding a little loose, slightly skewed, with a little bowing/splaying. Boards and spine with foxing, discoloration and marks as shown, usual bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities.
