Publisher’s green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, lower page edges untrimmed, tipped-in colour frontispiece plate (mounted on green card with tissue guard), 13 black-and-white plates including pictorial title page, vii / 267 pages plus advertisements, 19.5 x 14.7 cm.
Early reissue (undated, but circa 1925) of J.M. Barrie’s classic fairy tale of the “boy who wouldn’t grow up” – here including all 13 of F.D. Bedford's wonderful original illustrations from the 1911 first edition, together with a beautiful extra colour plate, showing Peter Pan and Wendy spring-cleaning (note that the colour plate was a later addition by Bedford, making its first appearance in 1913; it does not feature in any of the earliest editions).
This particular copy has an interesting provenance, carrying the bookplate of Christine Knowles (1890-1965), who also signs the book. Knowles worked tirelessly throughout both the First and Second World Wars, organizing parcels and reading material for prisoners of war (the British Prisoners of War Fund, set up to provide books and games for POWs in Germany and Italy, was in fact originally called the Christine Knowles Books and Games Fund for Prisoners of War). She was awarded the OBE in 1919 for her services.
Contents very clean. Usual age-toning to paper, a few foxing spots, a few pale smudges/finger-marks, a little bumping to corners, four corner creases, one plate plus one text leaf with vertical crease, last leaf with two short closed tears, four pairs of leaves clumsily opened (with chipping and tears to lower edges), untrimmed (protruding) lower edges with usual bumping, browning, creasing, nicks and wear. Endpapers with usual foxing/offsetting, one small tear; front endpapers with pictorial bookplate plus signature (see Provenance, above); rear endpaper hinge with a few small splits (hardly noticeable). Edges of page block with a little foxing; top with darkening, a few small marks. Binding somewhat loose, with lean. Boards and spine with discoloration and marks as shown, usual bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities; upper joint with tear plus small hole.
