The Amarna Period is a short but important phase in the history of Ancient Egypt when the Pharaoh Akhenaten broke away from the Polytheistic religion, centred on the cult of the state god Amun, based in Thebes. He moved his capital to "Akhetaten" (The Horizon of the Aten") and banned the worship of all gods except the visible disc of the sun, Aten. He changed his name from Amenhotep IV, to Akhenaten, and set about building a new capital at modern day Tell el Amarna. During his brief reign, he built new palaces and temples, and their was a fashion for aience beaded jewellery in the form of fruit and flowers. This is a selection of Poppy seed, grape, mandrake, lotus petal, etc, reflecting the full range of flowers depicted and the Faience maker's skill in producing miniscule examples of multicoloured faience jewellery.
