L'Eroica (1911-1921; 1924-1944) was an Italian monthly magazine on Futurism, art, literature and woodcut, founded in La Spezia at the beginning of the 20th century.
Founded and directed by Ettore Cozzani, the magazine had the editorial purpose of enhancing national creative forces, openly dealing with ‘every aspect of art and life’. A publication open to the Vienna Secession and to Rationalism, quickly became important for its innovative character and curiosity towards new young talents, both Italian and European.
When the first issue was published on July 30th, 1911 with the subtitle “Rassegna d'ogni poesia”, the magazine shines for its formal qualities: the choice of handmade paper, the colour covers, and its well-designed woodcut illustrations.
In addition to the large group of artists, including Adolfo De Carolis until 1914, and the architect Franco Oliva, to the magazine also contributed the sculptor Magli and the composer Pizzetti. The desire to affirm, spread and defend woodcut offers as a fundamental overview of this expressive technique in Italy, revived in the first half of the twentieth century. In fact, the magazine became an important meeting place for Italian woodcut artists by organizing, in 1912 in Levanto, the first international exhibition, with catalogue.
Closed in 1921, the magazine resumed the publication in 1924, under the Fascist regime, with contributors such as Adolfo Wildt, by changing the original style with the surrender to a unitary graphics (text/image) for an increased use of the photographic reproduction of artworks. Later, L’ Eroica, alongside the publication of the magazine, also started the activity of publishing company, by publishing literary works (poetry and fiction), essays, biography and, in 1922, the famous artist book of Sibilla, dramatic poem in four acts by Artistide Sartorio.
After the first period in the Ligurian city, Cozzani decided to move to Milan, where he continued the activity until he closed. The bombings of the 1943-1944 on the Lombard capital made more swift the end of this artistic experience, and damaged the magazine’s archives.
To L’ Eroica, were dedicated some important exhibitions of extraordinary documentary value, of which the catalogues remain. Full collections of the magazine were kept at the Biblioteca Civica of La Spezia and at the Biblioteca of Via Senato in Milan. Some editions were printed in Pescia at the printing house of Artidoro Benedetti.
