Barter beads made using the Prosser "cold cameo" technique, originated by the English brothers Richard and Thomas Prosser in 1840, with the aim of making porcelain buttons. Realising the Prosser technique could be used for beads, Jean-Felix Bapterosses, French button maker and bead collector, buys the rights of the technique in the 1850s. However, Bapterosses quickly realises that the paste used in the Prosser technique is too stiff to make beads. After a few attempts, he discovers that adding cow milk makes the paste much more malleable and also enables to obtain a lustre similar to that of porcelain. Inspired by the popularity of Venetian barter beads, he starts making pressed beads on a large scale in his Briare factory, in France, to use them as currency for European traders. The Prosser beads stood out from other European barter beads because they were produced in a large range of colours and were also translucent. They were very successful in the city of Kakamba in the Republic of Congo, hence the name Kakamba Prosser Beads. According to the locals, the Prosser beads were deliberately strung on fragile threads in order to break easily, therefore creating obsolescence. The inhabitants of Kakamba were convinced that it was a sacrilege to pick them up, which explains why beads are still found in the ground all over the region.
