|Boektitel:||Fragmento original sobre pergamino de la Torá (Biblia /Ley Judía). Leviticus - Siglo 18|
Original manuscript on parchment. Torah (Bible, Jewish law). Leviticus. Sheet of 45 x 17 cm.
It’s a very rare fragment of one of the five books of the Pentateuch, the part of the Jewish Bible attributed to Moses. This piece comes from a work of art made by the Jewish communities in Libya. The handwriting is very clear and has beautiful fine strokes. This over 300 years old manuscript is in very good overall condition. It has normal signs of use and age. It’s written in the earliest Hebrew language. This is recognised as the most valued for its characteristic style and is one of the most beautiful ones. It was created following the guidelines and rules that regulate every aspect, from the material used to the shape of the handwriting, as well as the place and atmosphere that Jewish laws require from the scribes. This over 100 years old manuscript is in very good overall condition.
This manuscript includes the teachings, the doctrine or more specifically the JEWISH law. In the broadest sense it’s commonly used to refer to the whole revelation and divine teachings to the people of Israel. According to the Hebrew tradition, the five books of the Pentateuch were written by Moses, who received a revelation directly from God at Mount Sinai. Although Rabbinic authors differ in the details, the Orthodox Jewish doctrine holds that all 5 books come directly from divine inspiration, so every detail in the text (from lexicon to punctuation) is very significant. According to this doctrine, the process of writing the scrolls to be used in the worship is subject to very strict rules: a ritual scribe, familiarized with the relevant requirements, is in charge of the task. These manuscripts are never dated, so establishing their century of production is a difficult task. The type of handwriting, the strokes and the material used (deer skin) easily prove that they are over 300 years old. The reason being this type of skin and its process of tanning fell into disuse quite a few centuries ago.
These pages were selected from Bibles that, because of the passage of time, were broken in accidents or synagogue attacks. Logically, it may have stains, folds, ink smears, etc. as normal for this type of pieces for its use and age. The real colour of the pages is darker than shown in these photos. Please, see the photos carefully. They are an important complementary part of this description and a good way to see the condition of this masterpiece. Condition as shown in the photos.
