Geology: Labradorite belongs to the feldspar group and so belongs to the family of plagioclases. These for their name from the Greek word Plagios, which means “slanting.” Slanting refers to the crystalline structure in Labradorite / Spectrolite being not perpendicular, but slanting. This is the reason for the shining play of colors associated with this stone. Labradorite got its name from the fact that it was first discovered in Labrador at the end of the 18th century. Additional sites at which it was later found have been exploited in Ojamo, Finland. The Labradorite that comes from Finland is called Spectrolite. The most important sites at which it is found today are in Canada, Finland and Madagascar. The most attractive and pure Labradorite comes from Madagascar. Labradorite has a hardness of 6 to 7.
