At the western edge of the large Dasht-e-Kavir desert, 200 kilometres east of Isfahan, lies the picturesque village of Nain, with its characteristic clay houses and one of Iran's oldest mosques whose vestiges date back to the 1900s.
This village's rugs are highly sought after and have an excellent reputation. Both the material and the manufacture are first class, and the knot density is very high, often a million knots per square metre. The most exclusive material has been used to make this rug (wool on silk and with silk used for the warp as well as for the weft and pile).
The design with a central medallion, Arabesque and floral motifs is common. It strikes a similarity with the rugs of the neighbouring Isfahan. The rarest type of Nain rug on the market is known as the Nain Tuteshk - these rugs are highly sought after and created with incredibly fine craftsmanship. There are also sometimes rugs with similar designs and colours but with slightly lower quality, sold under the name Nain.
The names 4La, 6La and 9La are often linked to the name of the Nain rug, where "La" is the word for each layer. This designation is used to determine the quality of a Nain rug and indicates the number of strands of yarn used for each strand of the warp in the manufacturing process. The lower the number, the finer the knot and the greater the knot density. You can check how many layers were used by counting the number of strands in one of the rug fringes: if you see three pairs of strands (see the photo below), it is a 6La rug.
