in good condition, with traces of wear
Robert FitzRoy, the superb sailor and founding father of the Met Office, He is often remembered merely as Charles Darwin’s taciturn, Tory captain on HMS Beagle.
It is not known for sure if some of this barometer design was based on a plan proposed by Fitzroy himself. More likely It was designed, made, and named in his honor sometime after his death in 1865. The success of Admiral Fitzroy's marine barometer and the many variations of it, helped form the foundation of modern weather forecasting, which in turn has saved many lives at sea.
The wood barometer includes a storm glass and thermometer along with Fitzroy's printed paper and a clock, the mecahnism works and has got the key and the hands, the brass bezel surround is missing.
115 x 23 x 7 cm
The barometer reading was adjusted to that of sea level by adding or removing mercury from the cistern.
