The Rolling Stones is a British rock band from London, England. Formed in 1962 with guitarist and original leader Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart, singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts joined them later on and completed the original band. Ian Stewart was stepped aside from the original band by the band’s manager Andrew Loog Oldham in May 1963, but continued to work (as road manager and as a pianist) with the band until his death in 1985. Jagger and Richards quickly become a duo of songwriters and take little by little charge of the band management, replacing a more and more erratic Brian Jones.
The name of the group comes from a Muddy Waters song, Rollin' Stone, chosen by Brian. The blues has always been the main inspiration for the Stones, who were one of the main reason for the return of this music on the forefront, through the British Blues Boom. The first recordings of the Rolling Stones are cover songs of American blues and rhythm-and-blues. After being successful in the United Kingdom, they became popular in the United States, during the 'British Invasion' (initiated by the Beatles) in the mid-1960s. Their 1965 single, (I can't Get No) Satisfaction made the Stones famous worldwide.
Since 1966 and the Aftermath album, the songs of Jagger and Richards, embellished by the instrumental experimentation of Brian Jones, developed a stylistic diversity that remains present nowadays. Jones drowned in his swimming pool in July 1969, shortly after being suspended from the band. He was replaced by Mick Taylor, who was involved in touring and recording five studio albums before leaving the Stones in 1974. The former guitarist of the Faces, Ronnie Wood, then took his place and kept it since then. Bill Wyman left the band in 1993. Bassist Darryl Jones then joined the band without becoming an official member.
The Rolling Stones released 23 studio albums in the United Kingdom (25 in the United States), 32 compilations and 8 live albums (9 in the United States). In 2012, the band sold more than 400 million albums worldwide. In 1971, Sticky Fingers began a series of eight consecutive studio albums making the first place in the charts, on both sides of the Atlantic. Their most recent album, A Bigger Bang, was released in 2005. In 2016, came out the 23rd studio album of the band “Blue and Lonesome” covering Blues standards. The band is the second one to be the most successful on the Billboard Hot 100, the reference for sales of singles in the United States. The Stones were ranked N°4 in the list of the 100 greatest artists of all time in Rolling Stone magazine.
The Rolling Stones entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and Mick Jagger was honoured by the Queen of England in 2002. Their portrayal of rebel bad boys in the 1960s, is a major reference for generations of rock musicians who followed them. After more than fifty years of career, the Stones, all septuagenarians, continue to successfully perform on stage all over the world, and show no intention of putting an end to the existence of the band.
