The monumental historical essay on Napoleon from consulate to the fall of the empire, in original French language. 20 volumes published in 17 years (1845-1862, first volumes by Paulin, then by Lheureux).
Good overall condition, some (usual) foxing, dust on top edge and other minor defects. Note that a last rare volume entirely dedicated to index of names, places and topics has been published 12 years later and is not offered here. The genuine 19th Cent. binding creates a nice aesthetic unit and a highly decorative effect.
Originally planned to end with Napoléon's first abdication, to be print in only 10 volumes, this history has been continued until the death of Napoleon in Saint-Helena. This increase in the number of volumes is due to numerous official documents which the author had at his disposal and which he integrated into his story. To avoid losing subscribers, the publishers increased the number of pages without increasing the price, offering at the end two volumes for the price of one.
The bet was winning and this story of Napoleon was a huge success. There are however two versions of the original edition: an edition without engraving and an edition, more expensive, with engravings. We offer here the edition with engraved plates by great artists (Charpentier, Isabey, Vernet, Girardet, Sandoz, etc.). The copper plates are in their first print, printed with care on strong paper and protected under India paper, offering a remarkable contrast and clearness, and showing many details.
Marie Joseph Louis Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) was a French statesman and historian. He was the second elected President of France, and the first President of the French Third Republic. He was also a notable literary figure, acclaimed author of this twenty-volume history of the Consulate and Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. it was a critical and popular success in France, published at a time when the French public was looking for heroes. However, the book was criticized by Chateaubriand, who called it "an odious advertisement for Bonaparte, edited in the style of a newspaper". (Brunet, V, 822)
