Pastorino Mario (called "Gianni" or "Giannino" by his friends) was born in Albisola Superiore (SV) in 1929.
Formation and early years
In 1944, already at the age of 15 years, Pastorino Mario starts an apprenticeship at the pottery firm ICA (Albisola Ceramics Industry) specializes in producing ceramic coffee cups and accessories. Three years later in that same company he meets Eliseo Salino who, from 1947 to 1957 was the artistic director of the same factory. During that time, Mario Pastorino was trained as expert lathe master, and to increase his organizational technician, going up to the title of chief of the productive sector of the same factory, which had changed its name into "FAC".
Maturation and the founding of San Giorgio
We are in 1958, period of evolution for the ceramic industry that expands even in the furniture business. On 30th April 1958 he takes the decision to quit and, just 29 years old, with his friend Eliseo Saline and the young Giovanni Poggi, founded on 1st June 1958 the company San Giorgio, in the former Manifattura Ceramiche Italia. In this period of great artistic fervour of Albisola, he meets artists like Asger Jorn, Wifredo Lam, Lucio Fontana, Roberto Crippa, Agenore Fabbri, Emilio Scanavino, Aligi Sassu and many more. In the following year, that is 1959, when Asger Jorn takes an important order for Statsgymnasium in Århus, a giant ceramic Panel of 27 × 3 metres, that he will create in the laboratories of San Giorgio factory. When the work is complete, Pastorino Mario with Asger Jorn and Eliseo Salino embark on an epic journey by train in Denmark where, after thousand vicissitudes (told by the letters to his sister Piera Pastorino), he completes the brickwork of the panel in the school structure.
The entrepreneurial instinct and his first factory Ceramiche Pastorino
These great experiences, besides forming him in his artistic expressiveness, make him to decide to break away from the company to start his own business, when in 1963 he founded the "Ceramiche Pastorino". This decision comes also from the request by the company Lavazza of a large order of cold coffee containers, became famous with the name of Caballero and Carmencita, protagonists of one lucky carousel during the 60s and 70s.
The living and working partnership with the painter Mirella Fiore
After two years of work on his own he consolidates its activity of artistic ceramics by marrying the painter Mirella Fiore, and giving birth to a consolidated company able to create true works of art, crafted and painted by skilled hands of both the spouses.
The phase of business expansion
Originally located in C.so Mazzini 54, Albisola Superiore, the company Ceramiche Pastorino in 1976 changed its venue and settles in a larger factory/workshop, located in C.so Ferrari 133. Here Mario Pastorino and Mirella Fiore create a real and flourishing business of artefacts and artworks, creating and producing ceramics and majolica works for important customers. Throughout their career Mario Pastorino and Mirella Fiore host many artists in their kiln, among them dear friends like the painter Antonio Sabatelli, Ercole Bianchi, the artist sculptor Luigi Valerisce, and many other emerging artists such as Aldo Pagliaro, Paolo Anselmo, Giorgio Laveri, Negroponte and many others.
