15 Miromesnil Gallery, Paris
Private Collection Michigan
This painting has been authenticated by Philippe Piguet, specialist. The stretcher bar and canvas came from Claude Monet.
The painting is very bright.
Blanche was the stepdaughter and daughter in law of Claude Monet.
Blanche, was among the first impressionist painter. She immediately became fond of Claude Monet. She was eleven when she discovered the art of painting; and she obviously spent long hours in Claude Monet’s atelier, and also in the studio of Edouard Manet. Monet rented a summer house in Pourville in the summer of 1882, and Blanche became his assistant and pupil . She would often carry his easel and canvases for him in a wheelbarrow, and would set up her own easel and paint at his side. Monet took an interest in Blanche's work, providing her with a palette and brushes. While in Italy, Monet wrote a letter to Blanche's mother, Alice, asking, “Is Blanche still painting and am I going to find her in progress?” Blanche's work was done en plein air as she did not have an atelier.
This painting depicts an intimate French countryside scene, in autumn, with the House of Michel Monet (Claude Monet’s son) in the foreground. The viewer is pulled into the scene immediately as the eyes scan the setting and dive into the cozy atmosphere it creates. The house is nestled amongst the trees that reflect the sunset in the distance. The river meanders to the left, making the viewer want to follow the pathway to discover the town beyond. The interplay between the greens, the blues, the lavender create an Impressionistic dance of the Normandy countryside. The time of day seems to change as the viewer observes it. One wants to take a glimpse at it all day long as the light changes in one’s home. It is the kind of painting one wants to own, to permit one to relax, the eyes blinking contentedly, like a cat, when gazing at this remarkable work. Blanche portrayed this panorama three times. This painting is the most colorful one.
