Trude Fleischmann was born into a middle-class, assimilated Jewish family. After high school, she briefly studied art in Paris. From 1913 to 1916 she graduated at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. After a short internship at Madame D'ora, she did her professional training in the Studio of Hermann Schieberth (1876-1948). Early 1920 she opened her own studio in the vicinity of the Vienna City Hall.
Fleischmann has quickly become one of the most sought-after portrait photographers of Vienna. In her studio, she made recordings of many well known personalities from society, art and culture including Peter Altenberg, Gustinus Ambrosi, Alban Berg, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Karl Kraus, Hedy Lamarr, Adolf Loos, Tilly Losch, Max Reinhardt, Alfred Polgar, Schauspieldynastie Thimig, Paula Wessely, Grete Wiesenthal, Hilde Wagener, Bruno Walter and Stefan Zweig. Also dance and nude photographs were created. Fleischmann became famous with nude photographs perceived as scandalous of the dancer Claire Bauroff. Fleischmann photographs were printed in all major magazines, including Berliner Illustrierte newspaper, Die Bühne, Die Dame, Moderne Welt, Wiener Bilder, Wiener Magazin and Wiener Mode.
After the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Reich, she escaped with the help of the US-American photographer Marion Post Wolcott, with whose sister she had studied in Vienna, in September 1938; first to Paris, then to London, and finally to New York. in 1940, she opened a photographic studio in Manhattan. Also, in her new homeland - 1942 she received the American citizenship – she photographed well-known artists and intellectuals including Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, Albert Einstein, Otto von Habsburg, Oskar Kokoschka, Lotte Lehmann and Arturo Toscanini.
