Ikebana (生け花 or いけばな) is a Japanese word that refers to the art of flower arrangement, known in antique times as kadō (華道 o 花道).
The literal translation of the word ikebana is "living flowers", but the art of flowers can also be called Kadō, that is “the way of flowers”, which is the path of spiritual growth following Zen principles.
Ikebana is a very ancient art. It originated in the East (India, China), but it found breeding ground for its development only in the Japanese religious and artistic context, from an offering to the gods into a multifaceted artistic expression. Its origins date back to the 6th century A.D., to the period in which Buddhism, through China and Korea, arrived to the Japanese archipelago introducing, among other things, the custom of votive floral offerings. Originally, the art of flowers was practised only by noble people and Buddhist monks, the upper classes in Japan; only much later did it spread to all classes, becoming popular with the name of Ikebana. The first style, rather elaborate, was the Rikka, which included the presence of seven elements in the composition: three main branches and four secondary ones. Later a simpler style was developed, Nageire, followed by Seika, a simplified Rikka, less austere than Nageire. In modern times each school adopted its own personal style and they began to use low pots with a low edge and stones, dry branches, and other natural materials.
Truly unique book for fans of the topic (the true art of flower arrangement).
