Silver, 35 cm, good original condition
A decorative Georgian silver toddy ladle with a twisted baleen handle with a silver tip. It measures 35 cms in length and the bowl has a diameter of 7 cms excluding the spout. Although it has not been hallmarked it can be safely assumed to be of sterling silver which is the grade that the maker would have at his disposal in his workshop- It has a gilded shilling piece set into the bowl, portraying
George ii and dated 1758, which is probably the year the ladle was made- The bowl has been elaborately chased with a floral design and the handle fits securely, without movement, into the silver sleeve. it is all in very good condition.
A shilling was one twentieth of the old Imperial pound currency of GB.. It is believed that it was then illegal to use coins of the realm in this
way which explains why it would not have been wise to take it to the Assay office to be hallmarked. Such items were known as “duty dodgers” .
The maker would been in danger of draconian penalties on both counts. A very interesting item of social history.
