François Maréchal, born in 1861 in cover and died in 1945 in Liège, is a Belgian etcher. He also produced drawings and paintings.
Graduate at the Académie des beaux-arts of Liège (1879-1886), he is the student of the engraver and draughtsman, Adrien de Witte. He produced his first etchings in 1888. He stayed in Rome from 1902 to 1905, thanks to a scholarship from the Foundation Lambert Darchis. He engraved dozens of etchings (91 boards altogether) in Rome and in the surrounding countryside. Appointed Professor at the Academy of fine arts in Liège in 1907, he headed the institution from 1913 to 1920 and creates the engraving course in 1921.
He is the author of hundreds of engravings representing mainly landscapes of Liège and its surroundings as well as people who lived there. He was sensitive to light and represented it in his prints with excellent control, playing on the seasons or the different hours of the day. He realised corners of streets or paths illuminated by the light of street lamps, represented the fall fair lit by its early evening illuminations, depicted the atmosphere of the city at various times of the year or even staged people in their daily life as La trieuse d'osier or La chercheuse d'escarbille (1901).
His complete work consists of 728 engravings. In general, they are rare. Some of his plates do not exceed 10 copies. François Maréchal numbered his engravings, which allows to sort them in chronological order. Often, he entitled them, which allows to have some hints about the location of the engraving. In the book directed by Maurice Kunel, the most comprehensive book about the artist, the first 525 artworks of François Maréchal are referenced accurately. This book was made when the artist was still alive and in collaboration with him.
The Cabinet des Estampes et des Dessins of the city of Liège and the art collections of the University of Liège keep many engravings and drawings of François Maréchal.
However, his exceptional talents as engraver must not let us forget that he was also a landscape painter with accurate skills and delicate charm.
