Original letter handwritten and signed with her own hand by Queen Isabella II of Borbón, called ‘the woman with the sad destiny’ or ‘the genuine queen’. She was born in Madrid in 1830 and died in París in 1904 at the age of 73.
Isabella II of Borbón was daughter of Ferdinand VII ‘the Desired’ and was the first queen, since Isabella I, to rule without a king. She led the isabellists in the Carlist Wars and was Queen of Spain between 1833 and 1868. She had 9 children, only two of them were male. She married Francisco de Asís y Borbón and was mother of king Alfonso XII, so she was great-great grandmother of King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
This handwritten letter is dated in Paris in 1888. It’s addressed to General Camilo Polavieja (who was known for having started his military career as a private).
Camilo García de Polavieja y del Castillo-Negrete, Marquis de Polavieja, was a Spanish general and politician. He was called ‘the Christian General’ for his religiosity. In the military field he was considered as a great strategist. He was also considered, along with Joaquín Costa, one of the most notable regenerationists—in the case of Polavieja, from the conservative side—in Spain.
His political career was characterized for his respect for the monarchy, he had a good relationship with Regent María Cristina of Habsburg-Lothringen and was somewhat close to the most catholic and conservative sectors in the country, as well as for his attempt to foster reforms in Spain. The country was immersed then in a deep crisis caused by the end of the colonial empire.
On his return to the Iberian Peninsula after his military successes in Cuba and Philippines his supporters joined together in a movement known as ‘polaviejismo’, which has been compared to French ‘boulangisme’. He was considered as an ‘energetic’ man. He participated in the Hispano-Moroccan War, the Third Carlist War, the Ten Years’ War and the Little War and was field marshal of Cuba and the Philippines.
In this letter, the Queen expresses to General Polavieja her esteem, affection and friendship and her concern for his health, she congratulates him on his name day; she speaks on the restoration of the Cathedral of Seville, which she admires so much; on a good friend of both, General O’Ryan; she lets him know that they couldn’t meet until November or December (when Queen Isabella II’s daughter, Eulalia of Borbón, would have her second child, who would be Alfonso of Orléans); she sends her love to his wife Conchita and his son, Alfonso (godson of the Queen); she sends her regards to the Marquises de Castillejos; she confirms to General Polavieja the dates when she would be travelling to different cities, such as Paris, Munich, etc.
The letter can be seen on both sides, as shown in the photographs, and it’s framed on a passepartout. With a very beautiful royal emblem.

Si ha sido la aduana quien manipuló el paquete, realmente es una gran neglicencia por parte de ellos...
